Episode 121 – Night and Day

Today’s episode is about contention and reality. Bobby and Jordan finally do a little heavy lifting and take the bull by the horns… they put their noses to the grindstone and their shoulders to the wheel, if you will. Is it contentious to hold the line on reality? Or by standing and even thinking in opposition is one causing contention?

The sun is a scam. Remember, you can’t spell S.U.N without U.N.

A while back I did research on the quotation of D&C 84: 54-58 in General Conference — since ETB talked about it, no one else did till 1999. Interestingly enough it was RMN that quoted it and explained: ETB read him the verse in his office after his call to the 12, ETB told RMN that he feared the members of the church did not fully appreciate the value of the BOM. RMN says that when ETB read him the verse it “captured his attention” — almost as if he was not aware of the verse. RNM then continues to testify of the central purpose of the BOM —to testify of Jesus Christ.

Then RMN quoted D&C 84 again in 2007 but changing the original context of ETB saying that the members of the church were under condemnation for treating lightly the BOM — in 2007 he claimed that only nonbelievers are under condemnation:

“To doubters of that second witness—the Book of Mormon—the Lord issued a warning: “Because you have treated lightly the things you have received … [you] shall remain under … condemnation until [you] repent and remember … the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given … , [the Bible, and] … do according to that which I have written.”

    1) Mrs. T’s point is huge, imho.

    2) I feel as though a few years ago I woke up in bizarro world. Some things are so blatantly obvious and society has turned them on their head. When people are sick, let’s get them help. As Bobby said, we do it for heroin users. We do it for people suffering from eating disorders.

Several years ago I was struggling with the same question that this episode tackled — my life has been such that I have had to contend against injustice in the educational system for my children, and in particular for my son with substantial disabilities. But, in trying to follow the example of the Savior, I wanted to be meek, turn the other cheek, let people despitefully use me, etc.
I really didn’t know what to do and considered that maybe the difference was that we turn the other cheek with people but institutions that violate law we call hypocrites and hold them accountable. I also considered that maybe the difference was that I am not the one being mistreated, others are, and that it is ok to “fight” back in this sense because I am fighting for others.

In my consideration of these issues I reached out to someone for advice — this was the response I got. It felt right:

“There is a difference between enduring persecution in our own right and allowing innocent children toward whom we have a responsibility to be mistreated. We suffer for ourselves patiently. But we protect the innocent children over whom we have a responsibility to provide care, education, necessities and health care.

I think the Lord would do whatever He could to keep children from harm. He did not like it when one of the “little ones” were “offended” by adult misbehavior. He acted on their behalf.”

There are two main covenants in D&C 84. The first is the Oath & Covenant of the Priesthood that we are most familiar with. What most people miss is the Covenant of the Scriptures that follows. Read carefully the whole covenant in D&C 84, starting in verse 43.

It says that we must hold to “every word” in verse 44. We know what “word” he’s talking about, he means the entirety of scripture in verse 57, particularly The Book of Mormon. That is the part we must obey.
The Lord promises us the promise of light and even the forgiveness of our sins in verse 61.
When I hear people say that we should set aside the scriptures as secondary to the modern prophet, I hear the condemnation in D&C 84:54-57. These people are disobeying God.

God always has done his work with the little guy, way down with seconds to go in the 4th qtr. He does that so we all know his miraculous hand is in our salvation. We should not fear nor get discouraged if we are on the Lord’s side.

“All we do know, and that to a large extent by direct experience, is that evil labors with vast power and perpetual success—in vain: preparing always only the soil for unexpected good to sprout. So it is in general, and so it is in our own lives… But there is still some hope that things may be better for us, even on the temporal plane, in the mercy of God.”, JRR Tolkien, 1944

“Contend against no church, save it be the church of the devil.”
Here the Lord is telling us to contend against the church of the devil. I think it is a matter of intent. Preservation of truth in humility, or anger and just wanting to be argumentative.

Ezra Taft Benson’s “Fourteen Fundamentals of Following the Prophet” was given in 1980 at a BYU Devotional with many leaders of the Church.
What people forget, and the Church conveniently doesn’t mention, is after that talk, the “Prophet” at the time, Spencer W. Kimball, reprimanded Benson for that talk. Kimball was upset because it made it sound like he was infallible! He then made Benson go back and retract what he said and apologize to the leaders in attendance at the Devotional!!
I did a deep dive on this. In not so many decades we went from it being false doctrine to our main doctrine.
