According to Harvard, they’re getting an 11% return:
“The annualized return on the endowment, since HMC’s founding, has been approximately 11% per year and the endowment was valued at $50.9 billion on June 30, 2022. In fiscal year 2022, distributions from the endowment contributed over one-third of Harvard University’s operating budget.”

The S&P 500 returns an average of about 10%.
The deal with the endowments is that they’re generally driven by med schools, which not only train doctors, but operate expensive hospitals.
Also worth noting is endowment per student: https://www.reachhighscholars.org/college_endowments.html
Everyone seems to count differently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colleges_and_universities_in_the_United_States_by_endowment
“Confidential collaboration” might be the greatest newspeak translation. Triple plus good, my friend!
Maybe most people don’t really talk about Ensign because they are feeling fine about being on the winning team. Nobody wants to be a member of a broke organization. In Mormon speak: Righteousness = blessings = monetary success. Having the biggest bank account means a lot. And people have no problem justifying dishonesty to keep it (blessings) from being wasted on lawsuits/ taxes.
