Soliciting for tips has certainly gotten out of control. I’m seeing more tip requests at places not traditionally associated with the practice. Earlier this year, when it came time to pay the optometrist for an eye exam I was prompted on a screen to select the amount I’d like to tip. I’ve been encountering higher pre-set tip options to choose from, like 25%, 28%, and 35% (and a cumbersome or non-obvious method to submit a custom amount). Also, there are frequent instances in which the tip option is preselected . . . sometimes the highest amount.
