Episode 220 – Speak Freely

Once again, for the most part and without very much reservation, Bobby and Jordan discuss issues of possible import relating to the inhabitants of the world or possibly other people, and they don’t really pull very many, if any at all, but possibly some, punches.

I’d be interested in listening to The Principles Podcast: a member of the MindVirus Podcasting Network.”

I love the idea of a principles podcast. The entire libertarian movement is based on the non aggression principle, based on the principle that we’re all equal. The reason for all the political disagreement is that there is no anchor to principles. People are more anchores to their social groups and feelings than to actual principles.

“God creates order out of Chaos” – This comment made me wonder about the Order God has created in this time and space to do that. Who? What? When? Where? Why? We have examples in the scriptures in different times and places. What does it look like now? I imagine it is a network of people being guided by Christ. Messages from the Heavens being sent, through different mediums (some of which are people) and the Father testifying of the message to each individual as a Second Witness. (John, sidequest 1)
I was listening to a recording of an updated language version of the Book of Mormon the other day and this scripture stood out to me. “The Lord gives to every nation, from their own people, using their own language, teachers delivering His message that he decides is relevant for them. Therefore we should trust that the Lord is wise enough to guide everyone to the truth appropriate for them.” When I heard that it reminded me of this passage from a little Book of Parables I had been reading, it is at the end of the chapter 3 called Triangularity (sidequest 2, Oh… the Irony); “An uneasy peace settled among the young man’s followers. At length, however, they, too, concluded it advisable to have their own orthodox thought. “It is important to have uniformity in belief,” some proclaimed, “to avoid offending God. God expects us to be ‘one’ and therefore must be displeased when we lack uniformity. “But,” said others, “without the freedom to find God in our own lives, we are no different than the traditionalists. Surely our new faith stands for modern communication with God or it stands for nothing.” The growing controversy within the new tradition in the wilderness was in danger of following the same dangerous path as the earlier Triangularists. Men are alike, even if they follow beliefs which are unalike.
The funny thing is as I was looking up these quotes, I got curious of the LDS version of the Alma scripture. Apparently it’s Alma 29:7 “7 Why should I desire that I were an angel, that I could speak unto all the ends of the earth? 8 For behold, the Lord doth grant unto all nations, of their own nation and tongue, to teach his word, yea, in wisdom, all that he seeth fit that they should have; therefore we see that the Lord doth counsel in wisdom, according to that which is just and true.”
People have different interpretations of scriptures, do they all mean the same thing? Can the same scripture have layers of meaning? Even to the same person at different times in their lives?. I was at a presentation once where a friend mentioned this scripture in the context of being grateful for what you have been given and not to desire anything more. Another friend had that exact scripture put on a plaque after his mission with another meaning in mind. It’s funny and serendipitous to me. It makes sense to me why we should allow people the freedom to question and explore what they receive from the Spirit, that came into their own mind, in their language, with their understanding they gained from their life, including teachers sent to them that God decided was relevant for them. If we aren’t allowed the freedom to do that, will we ever be able to explore what is from the Spirit and what is not?

I was just highlighting and underlining my physical book, after listening to the audio book while in the car this week and noticed that I quoted the wrong verse of the scripture brought up at the night of the presentation.

This is the Modern English Version..

Alma 15 – Oh that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the trump of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people. 2Yea, I would declare unto every soul, as with the voice of thunder, repentance and the plan of redemption — that they should repent and come unto our God, that there might be no more sorrow upon all the face of the earth. 3But behold, I am a man, and do sin in my wish, for I ought to be content with the things which the Lord hath allotted unto me. 4I ought not to harrow up in my desires the firm decree of a just God, for I know that he granteth unto men according to their desire, whether it be unto death or unto life. Yea, I know that he allotteth unto men — yea, decreeth unto them decrees which are unalterable — according to their wills, whether they be unto salvation or unto destruction. 5Yea, and I know that good and evil have come before all men, or he that knoweth not good from evil is blameless, but he that knoweth good and evil, to him it is given according to his desires, whether he desireth good or evil, life or death, joy or remorse of conscience.
6Now, seeing that I know these things, why should I desire more than to perform the work to which I have been called? 7Why should I desire that I was an angel, that I could speak unto all the ends of the earth? 8For behold, the Lord doth grant unto all nations, of their own nation and tongue, to teach his word, yea, in wisdom, all that he seeth fit that they should have; therefore, we see that the Lord doth counsel in his wisdom, according to that which is just and true. 9I know that which the Lord hath commanded me, and I glory in it. I do not glory of myself, but I glory in that which the Lord hath commanded me; yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul to repentance; and this is my joy. 10And behold, when I see many of my brethren truly penitent, and coming to the Lord their God, then is my soul filled with joy; then do I remember what the Lord has done for me, yea, even that he hath heard my prayer. Yea, then do I remember his merciful arm which he extended towards me. 11Yea, and I also remember the captivity of my fathers, for I surely do know that the Lord did deliver them out of bondage, and by this did establish his church. Yea, the Lord God — the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob — did deliver them out of bondage. 12Yea, I have always remembered the captivity of my fathers; and that same God who delivered them out of the hands of the Egyptians did deliver them out of bondage. 13Yea, and that same God did establish his church among them. Yea, and that same God hath called me by a holy calling to preach the word unto this people, and hath given me much success, in the which my joy is full. 14But I do not joy in my own success alone, but my joy is more full because of the success of my brethren who have been up to the land of Nephi. 15Behold, they have labored exceedingly and have brought forth much fruit; and how great shall be their reward. 16Now when I think of the success of these my brethren, my soul is carried away, even to the separation of it from the body, as it were, so great is my joy.
17And now, may God grant unto these my brethren that they may sit down in the kingdom of God, yea, and also all those who are the fruit of their labor, that they may go no more out, but that they may praise him for ever. And may God grant that it may be done according to my words, even as I have spoken. Amen.
