Episode 289 – Midsummer Night’s Bling

The title of this episode has something to do with the content, but really let’s be honest…

Some people like to listen to us faster… (We sound smarter.):

Before last week, I had a pretty good listening streak of 7 episodes in a row. I’m back again.

Jordan – I did catch that you pointed out a reference to “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” However, that one was already used for episode 275 and it’s way too soon to repeat it. Instead, I’ll go off your “enough is enough” quote.

Episode theme songs for this week:

They Might Be Giants – “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”

    Berlin – “No More Words”

By the way… I’m surprised no one has yet commented… this is one of the best podcast header images I’ve ever seen–hands down–on the entire internet… and it was algorithmically generated. But seriously.

*chuckle* … probably subconsciously (full disclosure: the free, low-end, no sign-up AI I used is probably running out of someone’s garage… )

They’ve changed the format for this year’s World Cup. It used to be 32 teams. Now, it’s 48 teams, so the tournament is longer than it traditionally has been.

The word soccer actually comes from Britain.

If the USA wins the World Cup, it would be more amazing than the Miracle on Ice.

Is it an ethics violation for the government to hire a government employee’s probable Mossad agent girlfriend to perform at the 250th birthday celebration with taxpayer money?:

Correction: it isn’t entirely taxpayer funded. Mostly private corporate sponsors and private donors, but I’ll bet there is some taxpayer money getting there.

        Clarification from Massie:
“The war with Iran is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

It’s also ILLEGAL under the 1973 WPA.

Here’s how much of the $300 billion will come from American taxpayers: The U.S. will give foreign aid, military assistance, tariff exemptions, etc to countries that will in turn provide money to Iran.

With that said, $300 billion would be a bargain to get out of this terrible mistake and avoid countless deaths and years of weakening our military. Consumers have already incurred $60 billion in increased fuel costs due to this foolhardy war.”

12 million subscribers to the NYT–my university pays for mine, for all faculty and students at my school. This might be similar to the deal a while ago where most of the Politico pro subscriptions were paid for by USAID?

GOOD POINT! Taxpayers are probably paying for 90% of the NYT subscribers.
